Americans Internet users 1st choice: Social Networks & Blogs - E-Mail behind (Nielsen-Study)

Interesting study from Nielsen: US Internet users spend significant time on social networks, less on E-Mail or Instant messaging. But what are they doing on the social networks? This would be interesting to know. Creating their network? Or writing Messages (instead by E-Mail account on the social network)?
